The activity would be traced to his ISP's IP address which would then have his home address on file. From there, they would contact your friend with the details of what had been done and more importantly the exact date and time it happened. They would also have a record of the IP address used which clearly wouldn't link to your friend but you. Once he told them who else was using his connection at that time a knock would happen on your door and some people would then check your PC records and you would be stuffed.

Depending what you had done of course :D
Hope you've not been up to anything naughty ;)

You have two addresses that are sent every time you do anything online. The first is your IP address and the second is your MAC address.

The IP address is assigned by your ISP. In your case if anyone wanted to trace something back it would go to your friend because you were using his internet service. Therefore it would be traced to his IP address.

If they wanted to trace further they would look at the MAC address. The MAC address is unique to each network card. If you were to do something illegal they would go to your friend's house. He would tell them that you had also been there and they would confiscate your computer and look at the MAC address. They would know that whatever they were tracing was done on your laptop.

It will be traced back to your friend. At present all Internet Service Providers keep a history of all websites visited for a minimum of three years. This practice is currently under investigation by the European Commission. Search Engine Providers are also under investigation. So far Google has responded by stating that it will only keep information for a period of 18 months. This does not include Police investigations.

anything behind the router is a private internal IP so they can only trace it to the router which has the public IP. All the private IPs are masked to the single public IP on the router. so they will trace it to your buddy through the ISP, but then if your buddy doesn't want to get busted if your doing something wrong he'll hand them over your address

If you went to your mates then logged on to the net via his password ,he gets traced
if you log on with your lap top you will get traced , it's all down to your IP, every one get allocated one when they first set up an Internet access, and it's always traceable

You can't be traced - your laptops net adapter will be discovered on your mates network but theres no way that can be traced back to you. It can only be traced to your mates network. If worst came to worst he would be questioned about who he's allowed access to his network

It will still be traced to your computer terminal, but it will show that you are at a different address.

Computers are traced via their connection, so it would be your mates.
