My Aunt owns a consignment shop in MD. Last night, someone threw a rock threw the glass door and unlocked it, went inside and stole her cash register. How can we catch whoever did this? I'm thinking fingerprinting the rock, but I've heard it's expensive. What can we do?

Don't waste your time on fingerprinting a rock. You won't get any clear prints and if you did it doesn't mean that you'll find the person in the database.

Try security cameras.

Finger printing the lock is a better bet than the rock...as is any smooth surface...you can get the print yourself with clear packing tape and some dark powder. It's the professional processing and running of the print that expensive. If I were you I'd get in contact with a police officer who knows the area and see if you're not the only one getting robbed. Also, ask him if he'd be willing to run a print if you got him one...he can only say no so it's worth a try.

Also, most smash and grab criminal are idiots (why not cut the glass or pick the lock...it's quiter). So he might come back. Set up a wireless security webcam...they aren't very expensive and set it up where you can get a good shot of his face if he comes back.

Good Luck.

security cameras are fairly expensive these days, and you might stand a chance of catching the perp. i detest ppl who steal what others have worked for. i had a small business and the profit margins are usually very small and theft hurts everyone in the long run.
