Yes you have to add the dialing code. Instead of +440 try the acutal code you use to dial an international code. Like 011 or whatever it is for you. I txt my cousins in the UK all the time and I live in Canada so I enter it as so
0117712345678

yes use the dialing code, either +44 or 0044 (the + and the 00 are the same) but you must take off the first 0 of the number, say its like 07981196699 the telephone number will be
00447981196699 or
+447981196699

Put 0044 in front of the number
but take off the first zero in the number you are texting to
e.g
