Both.

Classic American animation (early Disney, early Warner Brothers) is better than what was done at the time in Japan. Recent Japanese animation is on the whole better than what is now done in America.

At this point, American animation is mostly either comedy (Simpsons etc.) or aimed at kids. In Japan it is in much broader use, so there is more variety.

I agree that anime is the best. Their stories are most of the time original, and the music is most of the time really beautiful! In anime, they tend to show the emotions very clearly (like the throbbing vein and the giant sweatdrop!!!) but I have never seen anything as such in American cartoons.

Anime characters are very cute!!! There is also a certain effect produced when you watch an anime, which is never present when I watch American cartoons. The drawings of animes are also much better in my opinion, the animation is often of high quality, and the stories usually tend to become more and more gripping as the story develops...

Also, the American cartoons are usually stupid and most of them are aimed at kids. They are mostly comedy and don't really show suspense and the realities of life. Animes don't hesitate to insert violence, adult themes and the characters often represent real people and reality and they have hidden morales in them.

In other words, I think that animes have a soul and can touch people, whereas American cartoons are somewhat lifeless and merely serve as entertainment. I also like Japan!!!

Im going to star this question and hopefully some people will learn by this question! I completely agree with you 100%, yet I know a lot of people at the books&authors section are getting just as annoyed by Twilight as we are. Really its not so much the book as it is the crazy obsessed fans! The books were okay! But I swear if I have to see one more Twilight related question in C&A Im going to shoot someones brains out of their head! I mean there is a search bar on YA! so why cant people just use that or a better idea would be to look at the categorys before posting a question because Twilight is neither a comic nor anime and unless they find Twilight "comical" it shouldnt be here! Okay now that my little rant thing is over.... lol. Im usually not like that at all! I think Underworld is great! I havent seen the new movie yet but so far it has earned good reviews and my friends seemed to have liked it. As for your question: Cartoons&Anime. :-P

I'd prefer Anime, though I like cartoons too but only when I need a little laugh every now and then.

Anime storylines are much deeper and more compelling plus their characters are very realistic in terms of personality.

Besides, in anime, the girls are pretty hot and the guys are pretty cool compared to normal cartoons.

It doesn't matter what country of origin is the animated program as long as its well-executed. Japanese use the term "anime" to describe animation of any kind regardless of origin. The Japanese would call Disney animated films "anime" as they would do to describe Tezuka Osamu's works. These days, "anime" are also animated in Korea. Really, anime ARE cartoons.

With that out of the way, both North American and Japanese tradition of animations has its strengths and weaknesses.

American studios in general enjoy a much larger budget than any other country in the world. They can afford to pay more for drawings to for each frame of animation. The larger budget also allows the use of pre-recored animation, which the voices are recorded and the animation is produced around the voices. North American cartoons in general have more fluid body movement and dynamic lip-synching. Unfortunately, animation in North America is generally limited to programs for kids, with very few adult or universally appealing ones in between. American media has a habit censoring, limiting creativity. Another problem is the quality of animation is not what used to be.

Japanese animation studios are hindered by small budgets and time constraints, often cranking multiple programs at once and there is no concept of reruns (there are DVD releases though) often to captilize on a popular comic series. They adapted a lot of short-cuts such as low frame rates, reycled frames, and record voices after the animation. In a sense, Japanese animation is more like an animated comic book instead of taking full advantage of the medium. Studio Ghibli has exceptional animation with its larger budget. Even so, animation is done before voice recording (thus the static mouth movement) and its framerate is still lower than the great Western animations of the past. There is more artistic freedom in Japanese animation. FLCL is an example of highly experimental Japanese animation. There is a greater range of subject matter produced in Japanese animation to appeal to a wider age group. Sometimes, it's the story, timing, and voice acting that is key for a good show rather than the animation itself. The downside to the artistic freedom is there is lot of trash as well; things that are way over-the-top and subject matter that many feel uncomfortable with.

I don't see how the fact that you can count the American cartoons (anime is just Japanese cartoons) you like on one hand shows that Americans are not creative. That just shows that you prefer anime to American cartoons. Yes, there are a lot of bad, prediactable animated shows made in America, but there are also a lot of bad, prediactable animated shows made in Japan. I really like "Trigun" and "Cowboy Bebop" as far as anime series go. For modern American TV animation, I like "Foster Home for Imaginary Friends", "Avatar", and "Venture Brothers" among others. I'm certainly not going to say I like any piece of animation from one country over any piece of animation from another. That's just ridiculous.

Modern non-anime cartoons all seem to suck- they're all obnoxious and stupid, save for a precious few, and they're all drawn in the same overly-colorful, flash-animation, seizure-inducing style. Now, the cartoons from the good old days were awesome- Bugs Bunny etc. They actually required some artistic ability to create too... the backgrounds were always beautifully detailed.

In a comparison between modern animation, though, I'd have to say anime- its more detailed, and more interesting to watch.

I love anime better because Anime is of course more beautiful visually. Anime shows almost always has a storyline to go on and that what makes people watch it more because they would always tune-in to find out what happens next. Anime is also more detailed even at grotesque scenes.
But I think cartoons are funnier but not satirically because almost all of satire elements are lies. Disney cartoons shows more morals.

Anime, because I enjoy following a story instead of watching a show for comedy like a cartoon.
