If and when I do buy Fish, it's on a Thursday and we get the fish as a last minute thing and only have a 30 minute drive. And we get back it's pretty late. So would it be ok to float the bag in the tank over night? And release them in the morning? And how much water do u release. I usually do the whole bag.

That shouldn't be a problem, just let the shop know the fish will be in the bag over night so they can give you larger bags and more air than water. This will keep the fish safe overnight. I strongly suggest you don't add ANY of the water from the bag intot he tank. No matter how clean the shop, there is always the possibility the water contains a disease or parasite.

You only need to float the bag for as long as it takes for the water to match that of the tank. While some people insist on floating it for an hour or more, in actual fact this amount of water only takes 15-30 minutes to adjust - so just wait it out. They would likely survive the night in the bag, but why take a chance?

You remove the fish and get rid the water they were in altogether. In truth if the water has problems, the fish probably does to, but it is standard practice to get rid of it.

Don't contaminate your tank with the water the fish is in. If you provide allot of air in the bag, I wouldn't suggest over night though I would get the fish out of the bag within an hour of putting the bag in the tank. That should be enough time for the adjustment for temp.

Everyone is saying not to put the water from the fish store in the tank. However, if you don't trust their water are you going to trust their fish? If the water is bad, the fish will be too and thus contaminating the tank and all your other fish anyways. Sorry off topic a little but I just don't understand why people are concerned about bad water.

But if I were you I wouln't leave them in overnight. Just let them sit for half an hour and let them free in the aquarium.

Good luck with you fishies

I dont know about the over night thing but your are not suppose to use their water. They could have something in their tank that could kill all your fish. I always let them set for 15 then dump some of their water (down the sink) and add some of mine and let that sit for another 15 then I take the fish out and add it my tank. I have salt water and if I have a fish that a little sensitive I repeat step two for an hour.

no put the bags floating for about 15-20 minutes only, then remove the fish only and put it in the tank. do not dump in the water because its might have different bacteria or chemicals than your tank and will contaminate it. dump the water from the bag in your toilet.

i wouldnt unless your fish are gassed.

If your petstore just blows into the bag then you will need to float them for 30 mins and then release them.

i get my fishes gassed as they come from overseas. thats the only time when i would leave the fishes in a bag for that many hours.

The fish most likely wouldn't have enough air. So yes, it would hurt.

We usually do the whole bag also. That's the way that is recommeneded in my area of the uk..
