Can I use brad nails to nail the new planks down (not tongue and groove)? Also, do I use some type of adhesive too?

They should be glued to the sub floor.
If you attempt to "toe nail", nailing into the edges, there is a danger of splitting.
I assume this is plank flooring, without tongue and groove.

Suppliers can guide you to the correct adhesive.

If you are repairing a section of your wood floor, you may not be able to use the tongue and groove. Where ever the tongue and grove will fit interlock them together. There may be a chance that you will need to shave off one of the tongues to complete the installation. A brad nailer can work, but make sure the nail is long enough and the air pressure is high enough to push the nail in deeper than the surface. Use wood putty to cover up the tiny holes. If it is a sand and finish floor the wood putty will not be noticed after you stain it. If it is prefinished, make sure the putty is colored for your wood or have a touch up kit to color in the tiny holes. Touch up kits can be purchased at places that sell hardwood floors.

Im in no way an expert on this.. but I thought Id get you going by repeating what I heard recently.

I went to have a floor done and the installation guys would not use small nails because I had gotten the 1/4 inch oak. I guess you can only use nails on the thicker oak flooring. I guess you also have to pull up some and stagger or almost weave it in with the new floor so the patch isnt so noticible.

The installation guys were going to use adhesive.

Go to your local hardware store, like Home Depot or Lowe's and ask them what adhesive to use. They will know.

good luck with it.
