First of all it's good that you soon recognised you were drinking too much and have now taken the initiative to stear clear of it for a while. Your body has become used to receiving alcohol, so it will take a little while for your brain and body to return to normal and the first few days of alcohol withdrawal symptoms are usually the most intense; after that, symptoms tend to subside gradually. Withdrawal symptoms are your body's expression of relief at no longer being intoxicated and is the process of your body becoming free of toxins, moving you towards good health. Do persevere and good luck. Try to avoid putting yourself in the situation that will necessitate you going through this misery again. (The site below might be worth a visit).

First up, nice one that you've thought to yourself "hold up - beer gut approaching". Doesnt make you an alco at all.
To be honest, yeah. I always go cold turkey off the beer for january because I give myself a caning over the christmas period. Stops me putting on weight and ensures I never keep going and drinking myself into danger.
First week i normally feel a bit odd, like your bodies expecting a dose of beer and is rather confused that it hasn't appeared.
After that, you'll start to feel better. I know that by february 1st i'm chomping at the bit for a magners, but I feel fresh after a month of nothing but juice tea and water, and it tastes better than ever when you hit that first pint.

Oh yeah! Besides being tired and feeling flu like, you may be experiencing high anxiety?!?! Your brain was letting the alcohol do the endorphen, seratonin thing and take over. But now the brain's gotta get off it's cells and do it's job like it's suppose to. I took melatonin at night just to keep my nerves at bay. And a valerian root (smells like feet!) during the day. Or a kava. All over the counter.

you probably thought right anything in moderation is alright you feel awful because for one your body is withdrawing and for another you probably took solace in that drinking time and getting back to reality after anything addictive is going to be hard

Yes. Your body is used to the alcohol, and it takes a toll when you stop. My suggestion: Keep drinking.

unfortunately the more you drink, the longer it takes to feel better. but stick with it and learn one more lesson in your drinking education.
