challenge them?
I ask this because there has been a lot of posts on here about the behaviour of young people.
Personally I do challenge them - last year I went to a football match and on the tube home a young lad of about 13 with a bandanna covering his nose and mouth was waving a lit lighter over the wicks of some rather large fireworks.
Whilst the rest of the carriage shifted uncomfortably and tried to get as far away from him as possible, I asked him what he thought he was doing, he may have given me an evil look but he stopped and got off at the next station.

Also y'day my bf challenged a group of boys throwing stones at 2 girls . . . again they stopped and apologised.

Whilst I apprecaite that in a minority of cases there may be some risk involved I still think we all have a responsibility to intervene where we can . . .

what do you do - any examples?

I have done that too!
a four year old hurling racial abuse at an asian woman, marched him home to his mumk said is this yours? then told her what the little sod had done, she had the good grace to look embarrassed even though he can only have learned that kind of rubbish at home.

hey bailey chill, I'm on your side, I was talking about the kind of things like in my example - - I am sure you don't do that right?
I work with teens and it p*sses me off when people have a go for nothin. but it also winds me up when people walk past someone being bullied or worse . .

I don't just intervene...I have been known to haul the kids back to the parents and guess who I lecture...it ain't the kids.

ugh u know i have a small problem with ur question. if a young person is acutally doing something dumb, i say stop them.

but the problem is ppl who challenge someone who's NOT doing anything. i mean i cant tell u how many ppl overreact whenever i walk into a store. i have a manager following me around pretty much the entire time. i have been thrown outta 7/11's bcuz there were 'too many teenagers' when i looked like the only one in the store

i agree u should challenge someone when they are soing something bad. but only do it if u r 100% positive they are ACTUALLY doing something, otherwise u have a bunch of pissed off teens like me growing up.

'Whilst I apprecaite that in a minority of cases there may be some risk involved I still think we all have a responsibility to intervene where we can . . . ' dont intervene where u can. only intervene where u should. trust teens a little more. i have long hair, but i'm a straight a honnor roll student and one of the fastest high school cross country prospects in the state. trust teens, we arent all that bad

Yes, actually! The other day I came was walking to my car in the grocery store parking lot and there were three children sitting in a truck, probably ages 6 - 10. The older boy was pounding on the little guy, who was crying. I yelled, "Hey", and walked over and gave them a lecture. Just then the mom came out of the grocery store and told me to mind my own business. I told her that I didn't think it was right, that this little guy was getting beaten. Someone had to stop it. She just got in her truck and drove off, yelling at the kids and slapping the older one.

I'd like to think I'd intervene but it's a lot easier (and often safer) to walk on by and plead ignorance. I wish that wasn't the case but too many times you read about 'have-a-go' heroes ending up dead through trying to be brave.

If thugs and criminals are happy enough to murder policemen for trying to intervene, I really doubt many wouild think twice about killing a citizen.

Saying that, I'd probably intervene in many cases.

i challenged a group of youths that stole my sons bike out of my garden, this resulted in my son too scared to leave the house as they were threatening him i phoned the police but they said they wouldnt do anything unless my son was harmed physically!!!
then my window was smashed and in the end we found the bike just up the road no damage done to it they had just taken it for fun!!!
i wouldnt do this again as my son suffered as a result. luckily it all stopped after about 2 weeks and we have never heard from them again!

yes i would challenge any youngster who was putting anyone else or any animal in danger, i think it all depends on how you approach them as to how they react to you.
I intervened when i saw a young girl being bullied by a boy at the school gates, she was obviously very frightened and there was no way i could have just left her in his mercy...... i had a good chat with this boy and he ended up cryin in my arms.

I do not challenge them even though I would like to. I do not want to get into a confrontation with parents who have such bad kids. My boyfriend challenges them and it embarrasses me so bad.
