From the previous answers, I agree with them, but I'm going to say something different here. Have you had your plugs out and checked them? For that matter, when was the last time you had them replaced? Sounds to me like something in your engine electrical system needs replacement, not your carb. I would check the following: your plugs, wires, distributor, cap and rotor. If you take off the cap, and notice any kind of corrosion, it needs to be replaced. Points as well. Not just the fuel system could cause that problem; it could also be your spark, and if that's the case, check out the individual parts to see if they need replacement. Sounds to me like your plugs (thankfully) are definitely worn--the electrodes are burned out or fouled up somehow. Just so you know, normal plugs will have reddish tan on the porcelain just below the gap. If it doesn't look anything at all like that, replace them. Overall, it just sounds to me that things need to be replaced in a scheduled maintainence period. Also, if you take the car to a shop, please take it to one that is ASE-qualified--anywhere else and you will be taken advantage of.

Depending on the motor you may have a Rochester Carburetor. From your explination of what's going on you most likely have a bad accelerator pump inside the carb.. To test the pump try the following: *Remove the air cleaner and watch the primary (front) barrels. With the motor off firmly hold the throttle linkage and quickly move it toward the firewall. You should see two distinct shots of raw gasoline spray onto the primary fuel distribution rings. If you see a weak spray with air mixed with fuel the accelerator pump is to blame. These carbs. have fuel filters located inside the connection where the gas line bolts to the carburetor. Replace with a paper AC-Delco type.
If you rebuild your own carburetor buy a genuine GM overhaul kit. They always fit better and the accelerator pumps are the correct length.

Its your carburator....plain and simple. most likely it just needs to be rebuilt. Do Not by a replacement carb because there never right. If yours has an issue buy a junk one from a junk yard and use those parts.

The carb rebuild sound fine except that I believe you have throttle body fuel injection on that car. Your injector could be bad.
