There are two types of Yankee fans. The one' s who know their team is in a bad situation right now and may use the term "we can do it, remember 78? we came back then" and then there is the fan who lives in the past and most likely were never born in the mentioned year that say, "ya whatever, remember 78 Red Sox fans and don't forget you always choke by the all-star break and/or August, we will be in first by September!! because the Yankees rule and we always start off slow and we always WIN and we will buy what players we need to accomplish this goal"
It's the latter Yankee fans we all despise and give the knowledgeable Yankee fans a bad rap.

I am not a Yankee fan, but if I was what an awesome past. And they have won several World Series since then.
I am a Cardinal fan, the closest thing the NL has to offer. ANd there is something to be said for tradition and to pay respect as a fan to all the great teams that have played before.
So it is not living in the past, but respecting and celebrating it.

Not all Yankees fans live in the past. I, for one, realize catching the Sox is going to be a hard task. But all we have to do is make the playoffs. Then, it's fair game...and we are not far off being in that position.
This is 2007, and nothing is final yet. No need to live in the past...we have the future to enjoy!

I don't think they are living in the past, but they are trying to be optimistic in a downturn in their roster.
In the past decade, they are used to leading and winning the AL east. This time they are in a hole and their comparison is to 1978 where they were also trailing and came back to win.
Very few Yankee fans would compare this year to say 1985, where they trailed, caught up almost and then ultimately missed out, simply because they don't want that to happen.
when you follow 'a team' and not baseball itself, you feel that if your team fails, then it's a failure on your part, because when they win, they feel like they have won.
So, it's simply optimism on their fans part.

As much as I hate the yankees (and SOME of their fans)(like the one above me)---NOT ALL of them are that way!
Believe it or not, there are some yankee fans who are actually nice and who know the task at hand is not an easy one.
I do enjoy getting the "other" yankee fans riled up (the 2nd grade ones, that is!).

Every team does the same thing.
How many times have you heard Red Sox fans brag about 2004?

We're not living in the past. It just shows that it is POSSIBLE!
I can't wait for the Red Sux to be down 3 games in a series again and start saying, "Oh.. they can do it! They've done it before!", only to lose the series.

because these are alot (not all) but alot of Yankees fans who root for a team only when they win, so when they are losing they have to justify to other people and themselves why they are still fans, or fairweather fans as most people call them.
hah a I love how mad they are getting that is funny, I guess the truth hurts.
