A friend lives in an upstairs duplex. His stairway is outside and Bats often fly by his door as it's on the upper level right under the roof. What can he do to keep them away? Someone mentioned moth balls...Does that work for bats? Serious answers please and thank you.

Let the bats be..they are not going to hurt anyone...as long as they are outside in nature (and not inside his house) that is where they belong. Bats are very beneficial to have around as they eat thousands of mosquitos that otherwise might be biting your friend. Mosquitoes carry lots of diseases that can be passed onto humans such as west nile virus, malaria, and encephalitis. Bats also save farmers money by not having to spray with harmful pesticides..they are also important pollinators of many or the fruits and other foods that we eat. Did you know without bats there would be no tequila...they are the ONLY pollinators of the agave plant that tequila is made from. Also, these bats willl not be around forever...once weather gets cooler, they will leave to migrate or hibernate. Also keep in mind that many bat species are protected by law..as many are declining and endangered. Also, bats are NOT rodents like many peoplpe believe...they are actually closely related to primates. Please..tell your friend to just let nature take it's course and to leave the bats alone and just enjoy the show.

I dont know what you can use but I have a lot of bats by my house. They are feeding on mosquitos. They wont bother you. Actually if they weren't there you would have a lot more insects. Maybe if he used an insect repellant or citronella to keep away the bugs the bats will not come so close because there won't be any food for them there.

We actually put bat boxes behind my house to attract them because we live near the water and have such bad mosquitos.

I wouldn't send them away. They are eating tons and tons of bugs for you. There is a place near here called Chautaugua Lake. There were a lot of older houses there that they fixed up and in doing so chased the bats away. Now guests can stay in 3rd floor apartments etc. but after one year no one was happy because of all the bugs there. They actually had to build bat houses and bring in bats. Crazy.

Bats eat insects.
If your friend leaves a light on at night he /she is attracting the bats food.
they can move the light to another location, turn it off and install a motion light ,and either build a bat box -place it at a further distance .
I like having bats around, I have far fewer insect problems !

Bats won't hurt anybody and they eat millions of mosquitos while they are flying around at dusk. If you get rid of the bats you will be overrun with mosquitos which can cause illness when thy bite you. Many mosquitos can spread meningitis and encephalitis. Live with the bats, they are much safer than the mosquitos they eat.

if there's room he can install a bat box (like a bird house but for bats) away from the door.the bats may be living in the roof and that is why they are flying around there.the bat box will give them somewhere else to live.
