I would suggest you contact someone locally that does repairs to lawn mowers, etc. They almost always have trans, extra pistons, and other parts that they have salvaged from other jobs. If the mower is around 4 hp, 850 not's too bad a price. It's still a long way below the price for a new mover.
I suggest a local repair shop due to shipping costs, etc. You could also try the Sears craftsman web site to see if that's any help.

good luck

As your friend found out, Sears doesnt want to have anything to do with older stuff, specially not the outlet stores. All they wanna do is sell new stuff and be done with it.
Well , theres a few options he can take, if he wants to be paitent, he can scan the classifieds and go to www.craigslist.org and search your area for a decent parts tractor. Usually a non runner ( in my case ) ive seen for around $50 or so - depends on the seller. Since its a bigger tractor, someone might want more.
Heres a website for locating a dealer in your area:http://www.smithengines.com/transaxles.htm
since pretty much peerless has been the majority of transmissions in tractors.
Id have to say its probably in the ballpark - they arent cheep by any means , specially new youre looking at at least $400 and up.
I should also add, i got lucky one time- a local guy who tinkered on tractors was selling off his vast parts collection, i got a whole pickup truck full of extra decks, transmissions, a brand new 13HP briggs motor , wheels and other parts for ...... $150. It was a screeming deal , specially since i received a Murray tractor with a blown motor in trade for another i was selling, it was practically getting a tractor for free.

to most of us that does sound expensive, but everything with craftsman is.
have your friend check with some of the local small engine guy's their everywhere, most likely one of them will have a rider that has a bad motor and will even do the exchange for less than what he was quoted.
i have several of those guys around here, and the best way to find them is go looking, they are cheaper and most likely don't advertise due to overhread cost. good luck
as renpen say's you can reshearch and order any and all parts at sears.com maybe he just needs a part rebuilt. you can print the schematics also

According to "parts at sears.com" that transaxle is available for $875.00. Sears part number, 184956. Go to parts at sears.com, type in the tractor model number and it will list all the parts and give an exploded view of the item. You can by individual parts to repair the transaxle.

My advice is to compare the costs of the repairs to the costs of just buying a new mower. You may be better off just getting a new mower instead of fixing the old one.
