I like both just the same when they're small, but as they grow older dogs get so annoying, so I have to say cats.

Dog - if you want a friend who will be loyal to you, and will protect you when needed.
Cat - if you don't mind having a pet that will be more in charge of you than you are of it and couldn't care less about you.

Dog!!! They are more playful and active than cats!!! (just choose a nice breed of dog... like a golden retriever, chihuahua, terrier, beagle, mini pincher, etc.)
