I find them charming and feminine. I don't think they act like little girls. I think we just forgot what feminine women are like. Today we are constantly barraged with movies, video games and TV shows where women are more masculine than the men. We are presented with 110 lb women beating up 250 lb men. We see women hopping in and out of bed with different men. We see women drinking and cussing like old school truck drivers. Women shooting, stabbing and chopping up people with no remorse or regret.

In Japan, women are still much more like women. That is slowly changing, too, I am afraid. Somewhere along the line we confused the fact that women and men can be equals without being the same. Women do not have to be mannish to be taken seriously.

The fact that Japanese women tend to always be very petite, and have quite high pitched (girlish) voices lends to that illusion. Also it's the Culture, the Culture, the Culture. Japanese women have been raised for thousands of years to conduct themselves with decorum, grace and reserve; not to be aggressive and "pushy" which, by comparison, is the way that culture views American women. It's all about cultural differences, and perception. And oddly enough those cultural behaviours that we've come to associate with this or that particular group or nationality, are often the ones that may have applied much further back in time, and take no account of the many changes that have taken place among ALL people in different parts of the world. But I think because the Japanese culture is so strongly entrenched, and many Japanese probably have much less chance to interract with foreigners than is the case in a lot of other parts of the world with much higher tourist traffic, a lot of the old cultural ways are simply hanging on longer.

Just the same, I certainly hope you aren't equating that "12-year old" perception, with the reality, because generally speaking, behind that outward imagery is the reality of some very strong, mentally "together" and self confident women, who are anything but childlike.

There is a strange phenomenon in Japan where society favors girls who look young, naive, and impressionable. I am not sure why this is the case, either, but it is something I've noticed.
