ghouly05 is right.

2 months ago at work I saved a guys life by stopping someone stabbing him in the face with a bottle. I didn't do it because I'm fearless it's just I was always told in my childhood that character is defined by what you do, are you the sort of person who would let someone die if you could save them?

To tell you the truth it was fear that saved me from injury myself. I had the guy with the bottle and spun him around so that I was in-between him and the guy he was stabbing who was covered in blood with his cheek ripped open. I was lucky I was scared because I didn't try to take the bottle out of his hand and given 30seconds (what seemed like an eternity) he made the choice of not stabbing me(I could see in his eyes he was thinking about it) and he dropped the bottle.

My friend who I was working with wasn't so lucky... In the same brawl he did the same as me except he was stabbed in the hand when he tried to disarm another guy and as a result will not return to work for 12 months if he decides to come back.

You never want to become fearless. Having fear is one of the traits that helps us avoid doing things that could harm us. It helps us recognize danger.

Heros aren't usually fearless; instead, they have courage which is an abilty that helps you overcome the fear, even though you know the danger.

How do you overcome the fear? Now that's a big question. I think you overcome the fear by deciding that taking a particular action, while dangerous, is necessary to save or rescue someone, prevent others from being hurt, etc.

Not sure how people get it, but I think it has a lot to do with how you were raised. If you have been taught to have a strong sense of community responsibility, you will be more quick to jump in when danger looms. If you have been taught to be a leader or to take action when things happen, you are also more likely to act when danger arises.

There is no easy way to get courage or act courageous, that's why people who do display courage are so admired.

You need fear.
It helps you to rationalise decisions.
It helps you recognise when something isn't right.
