We currently have a forced-air heating system in place, and have been told this is good news for having AC installed.

Approx. 3K. Can be more.
Call for an estimate.

It's good because they can use your exiting ductwork, which will cut down on the cost. Depending on the size of your home, I'd say it would be about 4-6 thousand dollars. Keep in mind that your HVAC contractor will probably mark up the cost of the actual AC unit by 50-100% over their cost. Isn't that awful? Get a lot of estimates on comparable systems before you sign a contract.

We retrofitted a double that we had. It needed 2 units, (1 for each side), that were 2 tons and 2.5 tons. About 1900 square feet. We put in good metal duct work, not the flexible ducts that get dry rotted. We also had to have the gas room heaters disconnected and pulled out, plaster where they were fixed, electrical upgraded from fuses to breaker boxes, etc. The total cost was about 30K. This was for top of the line residential Trane units that had (if I remember correctly) 10 year warranty's.

I'd advise calling many, many places listed in the yelllow pages. When I had mine installed a few years ago the price varied by the thousands. I found a father and son team and got it unbelievably cheap. You could also ask everyone you know who has had it installed to see what they paid and if they are satisfied. I took the chance of going with the cheapest and have not regretted it. It has worked fine--absolutely no problems. It takes some time calling around, etc., but for me it was well worth the effort. Good luck.

It is if your Ductwork is Insulated. Some older companies didn't insulate ductwork years ago. It will have to be insulated and sealed for AC. As for price most companies charge by the ton, around $1000 a ton. Some charge up to $2000 a ton or more. If you get a price somewhere in there you should be safe. Also get more that one estimate.

I guess it all depends on where you're located and how big your house is. We recently had a 4 ton unit installed - air handler and condenser - for $4900 and I'm in FL
