Suddenly I see the screens about 1/3 too big. For instance when I view the YAHOO! page I have to scroll it to the right to read the edges of it. I believe a setting has been innadvertently changed, but I don't know which one or what to set it to.

Considering that the screen is only large when your surfing it sounds like you need to change the size of the font on Internet Explorer. Just go to settings on Internet Explorer and select a smaller text size.

On my new Vista laptop all I do to change the size of the text on Explorer is go to to top right hand corner of explorer click 'Page' (between 'Print' and 'Tools) and from the drop down menu click 'Text Size'. This might the same for Explorer running on XP.

If the text is too big in Internet explorer, hold the Ctrl key and press + or - to zoom in or out

Or click the page icon on the top right, go to zoom and set it at 100%.

Most likely your screen resolution was reset. Right click on any empty space on your desktop. Click the settings tab. Change your resolution back to normal with the slider. If you don't which one to use, just play with it until you get the right one. Also, be sure to click apply at the bottom of the window after changing a resolution.

Change your display setting. Left click any empty space, fix from there. Another way is to do this in the control screen. Find the Display , click on it and go from there.

Assuming you are using Internet explorer try going to view and change the text size.
I could be that your basic screen display is incorrectly set if it is sett to 640X480 that is way too low it needs to be at least 800x600
To be able to help more information is needed

I just had the same problem with my daughter's- go into control panel- click DISPLAY and SETTINGS Tab messa round with the screen resolution until the sample shown is the one you want, click apply or ok and it will reset itself for you.
My daughter is thrilled, ever since we changed her monitor the screen never fit the monitor correctly- finally we fixed it !
