There needs to be a Pyramid for Writers. At the very top the 'Unknown' and the Legendary - - - the writers of the Bible the Koran and Homer and Aesop and others in China and Japan whose names are there but I'm too lazy to research as well - - - then there are 'The Originators' the first Men/Women to proclaim, 'I Wrote This,' and had the luck to have their work documented cemented in opinion as 'theirs.' Since Chaucer fits into this group I wont desrcribe th thickening rings of the Pyramid but merely point out that Chaucer stamds atop lots of great writer from later eras such as Bronte and Irving and Dickens.
Chaucer was one of the originators and can easilly claim to be in the top five. I'd rank him Number 2 with Will Shakespear as 1.

representations of Chaucer began to circle around two co-existing identities: 1) a courtier and a king's man, an international humanist familiar with the classics and continental greats; 2) a man of the people, a plain-style satirist and a critic of the church. All things to all people (barring some sensitive moralists), for a combination of mixed aesthetic and political reasons, Chaucer was held in high esteem by high and low audiences--certainly a boon for printers and booksellers.
