Three basic steps:

1- Removal and replacement of the front brake pads.
a- release the caliper
b- remove and dispose of old pads
c- retract the caliper piston
d- Install new pads on caliper

2- Inspection and resurfacing of rotor
a- remove rotor
b- check thickness and surface of rotor
c- take to auto parts store for resurface, or replace if shot
d- reinstall resurfaced or new rotor
e- reinstall caliper

3- Bleed the brake system
a- get a manual for this if you've never done it.

It is really easy to do, and EXTREMELY cost effective rather than taking it to a shop. You can do it. I would suggest a Haines manual, or a shop manual for your vehicle to get started. The worst problem you'll have is breaking through any layers of rust that build up on the average caliper and bolts.

I would also just replace the carrier with a used one from a wrecking yard. Is it a common problem? Kinda, here's why. The CV axles in the front are turning every mile the truck goes down the road, 2wd or 4wd. That's a lot of turning, but here's the real problem. Many people buy four wheel drives and never use it, and most importantly never service the front diff and transfer case. Neglect.
