There is the start time, which is really the commentators talking about the match up, and other games around the league. Then there is the kick-off time, which is when the game actually begins when one team kicks the ball off to the other.
It can be confusing sometimes, especially when the kick-off time gets delayed for whatever reason, and you're stuck watching commentators for a while until the game actually starts.

They call soccer games matches, so I guess the same term comes to mind when discussing american football games., If you're used to saying matches, then maybe you'll just call all games matches.
