Acer are good value and have good specs, but they are put together very cheaply, so for laptops i probly wouldnt buy an acer.
HP and compaq are good steady brands for laptops, there quite robust. And they aren't to expensive.
HP pavilions and Compaq presario.
There are other good brands, such as fijitsu siemens, i havnt heard much about toshiba, but i certainly havnt heard anything bad of them, so they could be another brand to look at.
And you should look for in a laptop:
1GB-2GB RAM
80GB or more Harddrive.
Maybe Dual core processor, no worries if it hasnt got it. Decent size screen, over 14", 15" preferable.
Nice design, thin, sleek, thats your opinion though
Wifi.
Theres a few more things, but if it has most of the things above, then it should meet the expectations of the other couple of things (Like a DVD-RW, but all laptops have had them built in for the last year or so.)
If its a clearance XP then fine, if its a vista dont get home basic, as it really does nothing different to XP except a new them, go for premium
I dont know how much you have to spend, but obviously if you have quite a high budget then the specs should be the higher end of wat i suggest. (e.g. 2gb ram, 120-160gb hard drive etc.)
Hope you find a laptop that suits you!

HP and Dell are the top 2 selling brands. Go for an intel core 2 duo CPU, and at least 1 GB of RAM, a dedicated video card is a big plus.
A good model with a coupon;

i have an HP and its worked great since ive got it.. also it goes for what u want your notebook used for and how much you want to spend... if your into serious video editing and pictures and have the money get yourself a Mac... if not really get an HP or ive heard Fujitsus are good to. most come already equiped with CD and DVD rom/burner. so you'll be good. just be sure to go for that extra space in your Hard Drive if you plan to download lots of movies or songs. =) Good Luck and have fun

Acer is better than HP>
Toshiba is good.
Get it with these features as a minimum:
Vista Home Premium or better; do not get Basic.
1GB RAM - Minimum 3GB MAX Vista will not run on 512MB.
Biggest hard drive you can afford.
Built in Wireless.
Built in Network.
CD/DVD -/+ RW combo drive.

That relies upon on what you're eager to do with the computing device. enterprise issues i could propose the Dell or Fujitsu(which ever is extra value-effective or extra suitable). If gaming, Dell. If something (photograph enhancing, video enhancing, and so on) get the Mac.

Consider ASUS, a top quality motherboard maker. Many popular brands just buy their motherboards from Asus.
