in 2005 a charity in the uk ( moonbeams ) was found to be a con..also i know a lot of charities whom mean to do good .the cash you and i give gets filtered down by admin (paperwork.and corupt goverments) so very little gets to the needy.......so my question is ....should and do charities publicise and keep account of what the earnings and achievements was done with the cash........ie if i give £10 and £9.50 went into a water supply between A and B i would happily give ..........but if i give £10 and £9 goes to some corupt government for a promise of we will do something...forget it

check out a website called "Ryan's well" - t he kid started a cause in his primary years, administrative costs and overheads are minimal - his aim is to provide clean water to third world communities. He idea of sponsorship is not "Adopt a third world child" rather sink a well and take care of an entire community - in answer to your question, I wonder as well as to how much of your donation actually reaches the need - In Australia during the drought, city dwellers were asked to donate "neccessities of life" toilet paper, toothpaste, to those farmers struggling....I've always felt more comfortable with the donation of goods or services being less corruptible by those who would take advantage

Many charitable organizations can legally keep about 80-90% of the donations they receive for "administrative costs". So if you donate £10, only about £1-2 will actually reach the needy people you have in mind. With little oversight, many charities make an excellent profit while keeping up the image of kind-hearted caretakers of the poor & downtrodden. That's not to mention the corrupt officials responsible for disbursing the money, food, and other donations at the other end who keep much of it for themselves.

And recently there was a news story regarding recipients in Africa who were keeping the deaths of children in various villages a secret so as to not reduce the amount of money they were receiving. Adults were writing letters to the donors, pretending to be children and telling them of how their lives were being improved by the donations, thanking them and encouraging them to please keep it up, and signing the letters with the children's names, etc.

The solution? Difficult to say. It's hard to turn your back on the truly needy, but I believe people need to learn on a national and local level to stop killing one another in stupid little wars, to take care of themselves, and to live within their means.

I see your point. I give to Imagine Mozambique because I know every penny gets to the people of Mozambique. They are a registered charity and keep very tight strings on the application of funds, which are stringently keep out of corrupt hands. You could visit their website to see what they do - the list is impressive; wells, schools, clinics, ambulance, housing, orphanages....... www.imaginemozambique.org

Peace

Let's take children as an example.. adopt a child, rely on a program that uses all the money you gave to provide the child education, food, clothes etc.

that is always be a problem unless you get off your butt and get a bottle of water and give it to the people in africa yourself you will never know what the money is spend on. it is very unlikely they will tell you if money is spend on corupt goverments but then maybe that is what needs to happen to get water to those people

A lot of the money that does make it to Africa ends up in the pockets of corrupt officials and gangsters anyway!

You are right, less than £1 would make it all the way to the people in need. The claim it is for administration costs and travel expenses blah blah blah
