First tube train journey on Tower subway

It was that sucessful it closed in the November - and NOT, as in the answer of Sal*UK for mechanical reasons, it closed because it was losing money due to lack of customers.

The use as a toll tunnel only lasted 24 years, became obsolete once Tower Bridge was opened so they were closed

Although not strictly part of the Underground System, the Tower Subway was the world's first underground tube railway. Constructed using the revolutionary Greathead Shield invented by James Henry Greathead (used subsequently for many of the other tubes), the train (actually a single carriage) was cable operated and was effectively used as a shuttle service between the two banks of the Thames. The railway unfortunately was only open from August 2nd 1870 until November the same year due to very poor patronage.

The first "TUBE" or deep level railway was built under the River Thames by the "Tower Subway Company".
This was a single line which ran between Great Tower Hill and Vine Street - a length of 1,350 feet.
Cable haulage powered by two 4 h.p. engines was used to operate a single car 10 feet long.
This line was formally opened on August 2nd 1870 and closed a few months later due to
mechanical problems when it was then converted into a toll subway for pedestrians.
