My grandmother has gotten herself into an extreme packrat situation. Her house is falling apart, and is packed to the brim with junk. She is in fear of losing her animals, because she desperately needs repair men to come to the house to fix things here and there, but she is afraid they would report her to the health department. I want to help her clean and organize her house, but I live out of state. I guess my question is, would anyone suggest any relevant services or tips for this crisis! Have any of you had to deal with this?

thank you in advance.

Have her move into your place. then you and family members take care of the mess etc.

She might not want strangers in her house, and you have to be careful, that they don't take advantage of her. If there is anyway that you or someone in the family, can take a week off, and go help her, it would be much better. Once the house is clean and ready. She can get someone to fix the things that need repairing. Someday Grandma won't be there, and I'd hate for the family to say. I should have because it would be to late. Now is the time she needs you/.

YES. I have had to deal with this. My grandma (before she passed) could not throw anything away. Plastic containers, old coffee makers, broken glass, tin containers, broom sticks, newpapers, magazines, clothing that was worn out, old food from the freezer... you name it. The basement was LITERALLY FULL in two sections of this crap. The freezers desperately needed to be cleaned out and defrosted. UGH. I hear your distress. She had the idea that she 'might be able to use it someday' so she kept it all.

Here is what I would do. Encourage other family members to join you in this task. Take a weekend or two and visit her, but make them cleaning weekends. Start by making a list of what needs to be done. Things like recyclables, garbage removal could be at the top of the list. Then make a 'room' list. Tackle each room separately. Kitchen, bathroom(s), living room, dining room, etc.

Not an easy task, and MUCH easier said than done. Make sure that you take breaks from the tasks at hand and visit with your grandma, too!

What location does she live in,
I think as long as she hasn't got garbage piled up or infested with like flies and/or rats then you shouldn't worry about the health dept., just pack-ratting isn't so bad, but like I asked, where is she and you also located, city or state.

Try Dr Phil

Explain the situation to him.

Bennefit - he may arrange for her to get help for the hoarding and assist cleaning the accumalation

Drawback - I t would be televised.
