Vladimir Arnold was, and is, an effete snob.

Mathematics cannot "still" be something it never was.

That's not to say that Arnold didn't do some good work (including the solution of Hilbert's thirteenth problem in 1957), but denigrating the work done by other mathematicians is low-class.
