It's not just the internet. It happens IRL, too. It really is an ego boost to still be able to make an attractive woman laugh, blush and maybe pant a little. It doesn't have to go further than that. Successful flirting, the more outrageous the better, is its own reward. In fact.
In fact, for a Gemini like me, to actually engage in sex resulting from it would be anti-climactic. (Oh do get your mind out of the gutter.) Geminis pine and die if we don't flirt.
The intention isn't to get women into bed, although that can happen if we get too carried away with our own cleverness. When it does, it's usually because the person we're flirting with also got too caught up in the game and we reached a place where it would be awkward to back down. It hasn't happened since I started going with my current GF. It's good sometimes to have someone to rescue you and the women I flirt with seem to find it reassuring too.
Another reason, counterintuitive as it may seem, is reaffirmation of the relationship I'm in. I quit drinking 12 years ago. But, when I remember, I still have a beer or two every month or so to remind myself that the reason I quit drinking is that I don't want to--not because I can't. It's the same with flirting. It reminds me that I didn't get stuck with this woman--we chose each other.
My GF gets off on it. It's a little scary at times, but she gets a thrill out of knowing that beautiful women half our age or less can look or even touch, but I'm going home with her.

I asked somebody the same thing and he said that it's a way to leave from the routine and it's harmless. He also assumed that his wife knows he chat online sometimes. When I asked him what his reaction would be if he knew that his wife does the same thing... he didn't know what to answer...
