Or do just a few people feel that way. I've been getting warned not to tell anyone I'm American when I'm there. I just don't see the point. If I'm polite, courteous, and friendly, should I have to hide the fact that I'm an American? 1 second ago

I was there on my honeymoon and everyone was very friendly. We told people we were American if asked but like wise we did not "dress American". If anyone is out to harm Americans then they are likely to do so randomly, such as attacking a crowd. Try not to look like you are from America and the random bad guy won't pick you out as a target. There are still terrorist attacks is Istanbul so it's not like it's completely safe but we took buses out into the country without much fear. If you stick to the tourist areas then people are used to seeing plenty of Americans.

I get the feeling when I am in Turkey that there is some tension but its political rather than personal.

I hear rumours that US has been funding and arming the PKK and have been financialy draining Turkey for some time. Some Turks I talk to feel the country has been used by the US. But none have said they hate Americans as individuals.

The US treats most countries the same Theve been funding the IRA and Robbing us Brits for years aswell.
But I am ok with most Americans.
