My wife gave birth to a 10lb baby so she had no chance of getting away without piles! Our baby is now 7 months old but she still has them. Has anyone had piles which have gone away on their own after such a long period or did you need surgery?

During pregnancy, the increase in blood volume puts pressure on the veins, and hormonal secretions relax the walls of the blood vessels, making it more difficult for blood to return from the lower body back up to the heart. The weight of the enlarging uterus can put additional stress on the pelvic veins and constipation may also obstruct pelvic circulation. As a result, blood may pool in the lower body and veins may appear in the rectum - commonly known as Haemorrhoids or Piles. Straining to push out a baby is obviously going to make it worse!

They should of retreated by now, I has them after our 3rd, who was 10lbs 7oz, they were gone within two weeks, and believe me they were bad!
I suggest as above she needs to visit her GP, as this sounds like she needs some help here.

Piles never really go away, they just get easier in my experience.
I had an 11 lb baby and then a 9lb 5oz baby and they are 32 years old and 28 years old respectively, and I still get problems with the piles now and again.
Alcohol makes them worse though.
EDIT: Anusol cream is very good, better than Preparation H
in my opinion.

I still get them on and off and its been 5 years now! If they are internal ones then you really need to get a doctor to check it out. I use rectinol internally and within 1-2 days it subsides and goes away. externally is the same. Drink plenty of water and eat heaps of fibre as it is the pressure on the anus that causes the blood vessels to enlarge and get swollen resulting in hemaeroids. If she starts getting blood in her stool then definately get some help from the chemist for an over the counter remedy or see a doctor. This could mean they are rupturing.

She needs to talk to her doctor. Sometimes they do take a long time to get better - and some women, unfortunately, will have recurring episodes where they come back. Surgery depends on how severe they are and how uncomfortable she is for the long term.
Either way, she really needs to have her doc take a look.

What are the treatments for hemorrhoids?
About three days ago, I noticed what I think is swelling "right above" the anus. I'm not even sure if it is swollen. Right above the anus, it is about 3/4 the size of a pea...

get her to use ice packs on them. they soothe and shrink them. i had really bad ones during preg and narrowly avoided surgery on them. the ice cleared them up pretty quick (about 4 days)
