for windows operating system:

right-click on the drive in file manager/explorer
select properties
select hardware tab

usually cd-rw drives will have "rw" in the name, if it doesnt, write down the hardware name for the cd drive and do a web search

If you mean "how do I know if my CD drive" is also a CD burner, the short answer is: read the face plate. The faceplate is supposed to have all the symbols that it is compatible with. If it has symbols for Compact Disc Recordable / Compact Disc Rewritable, then it is a burner.

EDIT: Just buy a new one. Next thing you'll want to know if there's a ROM patch to make your drive read DVDs (NO!)

a sure fire way is to go to my computer then on the rom drive in question right click ( if right handed you would use your middle finger ) on it and will give you a little grey window and then go to properties and that will open up the properties to the rom drive. then look for a tab at the top that says recording. if you have that tab then your rom drive is capable of burning. hope this helps.

TWO WAYS:

the front of the disc try will have the Compact Disc Recordable logo, and the second way is to open My Computer and look at your icon for your cd drive.. if it says "CD-R" or "CD-RW"
