Hermione and Ron got married eventually... but they named their kids Rose and Hugo. I understand that they are both the first letters of their parents names, but is there a meaning behind theyre names? or are they random? cuz you'd think that theyd be at least named for somebody!

I've been wondering that too.

I don't have an explanation (yet) for Hugo, but I did think that "Rose" could be meant as a slight shout-out to the idea of the "flower" names. So Harry's mom "Lily" had her sister "Petunia", and now Harry and Ginny's Daughter is named "Lily" and Harry's Niece is "Rose" - so the cousins have linked Flower names, but it's a prettier name (Lily/Rose being prettier than Lily/Petunia, I mean) AND has the whole first letter thing going on.

She does tend to do related name series (like Bellatrix and Andromeda - Bellatrix is a star, Andromeda a galaxy - and then going to the nephew of those two, Draco - Narcissa's son - Draco is a constellation.) Plus their cousin Sirius is of course a star name as well.

Maybe Hugo is just random? although my guess is we'll find a person in JK Rowling's life named Hugo.

I'm not sure where the names came from. They were probably random. I didn't even pay enough attention to notice that they had the same first letters... but now that you mention it, that's true... neat. Except that the genders are switched. Maybe they didn't want to name them after somebody... I mean in the Weasley family it's pretty hard to distinguish yourself from all the tons of relatives... and Ron struggled with that forever... so maybe he wanted to name his kids something new. That's just a guess.

Please don't let people upset you... people are stupid... who cares if they don't like Harry Potter... just give them the thumbs down vote and be done with it. They're just going to say more stupid things if they know it upsets you. ... It's not just this category... you'll find stupid people on all the boards... you wouldn't believe how long morons were coming onto the Horse Racing category to make stupid comments about glue and dog food after Barbaro died. Just don't let it bother you... you don't care what they think anyway.

ok, ignore the harry haters coz seriously there is a reason why harry potter is so popular, and it is because the books and films are amazing!!!!!!!! i mean come on there are millions of fans over the world!

Now that that's out of the way, i think Rose and Hugo are just random names, there's no-one in their family trees which had those names... but yea harry and ginny's kids were named after people :)

I thought it was kinda weird how they didnt name them after anyone, but well it doesn't really matter, right?!

I think their pretty much just random, though I'll admit I didn't pay attention to the fact that their first initials were those of their parents (and it's intresting the gender reversal with the initials, R goes from male (Ron) to female (Rose) and H from female (Hermione) to male (Hugo)).

True Rowling likes to have names reused in the naming of later generations. Harry James Potter, taking his middle name from his father James. Ronald Bilius Weasley, taking his middle name from his Uncle Bilius. Ginevra Molly Weasley, middle name is the same as her mother's first name. Ted Lupin, named after his maternal grandfather Ted Tonks. James Potter, Harry and Ginny's son, named after his paternal grandfather. Lily Potter, Harry and Ginny's daughter, named after her paternal grandmother. Albus Severus Potter, first name from Albus Dumbledore and middle name from Severus Snape. Tom Marvolo Riddle, first name from his father and middle name from his maternal grandfather Marvolo Gaunt. Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, first middle name appears to come from his father's first name. In an online interview Rowling did on Monday (http://www.accio-quote.org/articles/2007/0730-bloomsbury-chat.html), you've got Fred Weasley, George's son, named for his Uncle Fred who was his father's twin.

But not all names seem to be associated with an earlier generation. Hermione Jean Granger, I don't recall hearing her named after anyone. Same for Draco Malfoy, Sirius Black, Remus John Lupin, and Neville Longbottom to just a few. In terms of in the Harry potter universe, it seems Rose and Hugo were named more at random than for anyone (though it would be intresting to know if they had middle names for specific people). In terms of why Rowling picked them, they might not be all that random.
