Mazda 3's are very nice cars. The 3i is the BASIC model. The 3s with the 2.3 engine is the better of the two. It also has a great interior and even though it appears small, its roomier than the toyota or honda. It also has this interesting dual gear shift (you can drive it in automatic or manual).
The design is very different and alot newer than many of the boxy cars that are out there. The mazda 3 concept is fairly new (has only been out since 2004, I believe).
Most cars try to improve on an old model but Mazda3's haven't been around long enough so they're very stylish to began with. If you notice, Toyota tries to copy mazda's design with the camry...
But anyway, it has a great reputation, nothing bad about it so it really is up to your personal choice. I don't know if anyone here even owns one but it is definitely NOT like a focus! Take a test drive before you buy...

Your question depends on your age, where you live in the country and...what's cool, which goes back to your age. Mazda3 is in the process of developing a reputation. Having said that, Mazda would love for the 3 to be a common car. However, it's not close. The best selling car is the Toyota Camry. This makes the car common because so many units are sold. In the 40's the Volkswagon was made with the idea of being the people's car. The Volkswagon Beetle has sold more than a million copies. This would be considered common then and now. Mazda Executives did the moonwalk when the Miata sold 750,000 copies from 1990 to 2006. The 3 has done well since it's inception in 04 for the Mazda brand, they are generating envy among their peers. So I would say that the Mazda3 is not a common car. In comparison not many people based on the previously mentioned examples are driving the 3. What can make the car dangerously common is if the 3 becomes a rental fleet car, like the Ford Taurus. Brands that are known for a fleet vehicle loose respect to the buying public, that's when the car is not cool.
The Mazda3 is developing a solid reputation for reliability and "sporting intentions." The 3 will never be exclusive because their is nothing particularly special or unique about the car per se. For a car to be exclusive, it must be either mechanically and/or stylistically odd, few in number or expensive in the after market. Which would imply that the car make has held it's value over time. The Mazda Rx7 and Rx8 come close because of the rotary engine.
The cool factor for the 3 and any other make and model is what you do with it. How you make it yours. The 3's design language and how it is equipped can make it a very worthwhile project to modify. This is part of the fun. Basically Mazda manufactures the core essentials of a fun to drive car, this can be enhanced by performance and stylish add on parts. The person that puts in the time and thought will have a nice package by anyone's standards; from Beverly Hills to Death Valley. Is it a cool car? It's way cool.

Yes, the 3 is a very common car. It's Mazdas best seller. The car seems to put a smile on people's faces when they drive it.

They are a ford focus with a Mazda body. They are a popular choice as they are a very reliable, but if you want cool, Get the Mazda speed 3i. It has a 260 horse turbo 4, with a sports suspension. The tests by the magazines were impressive. 155 mph top speed.

They are fairly common. I don't really like them, but I am seeing more. Mazda only makes 1 good car that looks good and performs well and that is the RX-8
