Neo-Con is a generic term used by liberals to describe anyone who disagrees with them. Many liberals don't even know what real conservative political ideology is all about. Yes, there is a "new conservative" movement in the USA, but that term is very broad. You could say that "neo-conservatism" started after WWII in a very small demographic. During the 60s, in opposition to the counter-culture, conservatism grew, and when Barry Goldwater published "The Conscience of a Conservative", conservatism became a force to be reckoned with in mainstream political America, growing in popularity until the election of Ronald Reagan. After that, conservatism, has strayed away from its traditional values of small government, leading to the liberals of today branding "neo-con" to anyone who is at odds with them. Yes, there is a "neo-con" part of the Conservative base, but it is a very small minority.

Specifically and simply a portion of what was conservative in America radicalized. _ _ neo conservatism is synonymous with radical conservatism. Being this radical about almost everything Is new for the conservatives. Eventually it will no longer be "neo-conservative" it wil be "the neo-cnservativism of the Gingrich-to-Bush era" or simply "the old post-Reagan neo-conservatism" And whatever will be the current conservatism after the conservatives continue to take a fall wil be called "reformed conservatism" not a new neo-conservatism.

The word Neo Con originated as an anti semantic slur to describe Jews who had become Republicans. Leftists have a very hard time when groups of people who are supposed to be liberals (blacks, Jews, any minority) step off of the socialist plantation.
I think Neocon has become a term used by leftists to describe conservatives.
As for me I am a conservative and I have a set of values. If anyone cares to describe me as a Neo Con, rightwinger or any other term then they can go right ahead, it will not change my my belief system.

A lot of people like to use the word but have no clue what it is. Many liberals call all conservative neo-cons because it sounds like neo-nazi, but the true meaning is someone who has all opinions of a conservative is a Neo conservative. For instance Rush Limbaugh is a neo conservative because he has the opinions of old time conservative fiscal responsibility as well as he is against gay marriage, and abortion. I am a conservative, but not a real neo conservative because I don't care if gays get married, and I am not completly against abortion I don't think it should be used as birth control, but I am not 100% against all abortions. So to answer your question the true definition of a neo-con is someone who adhears to every single opinion of the old school conservatives.

NeoCon stands for NeoConservative. That is a conservative who puts an ideology, usually religiouis, before all else including the Constitution and Bill of Rights. For this reason they are technically traitors to the spirit of the United States of America. I say "technically" because most NeoCons really don't want to harm the USA or realize their ideologies are destroying the unity, the core strength of the USA. This group was born out of a sense of self-righteousness and a government that had grown fat, lazy and corrupt. Originally they thought that they would clean up government and institute Christianity as a national religion as the Taliban made their version of religion the national one in Afghanistan. But recently it has been revealed that they are at least as corrupt as the old politicians if not moreso which is why they lost popwer in the last election.
People are waking up to the reality on the ground and when they do, they toss out the NeoCons.

Neo (new) Conservative.
Originally (back decades ago), most conservatives believed in small federal govt, states' rights and low taxes coupled with low govt spending, along with the standard conservative social agenda (respect for tradition, conformity, security, etc.). This group is now referred to as 'fiscal conservatives".
In the 1970s and 1980s, many ex-Democrats converted over the the Republican party, because their social views changed from liberal to conservative -- many got religion, and many large religious groups got organized under this banner.
These "new conservatives" brought with them their skills and practices at using govt to advance their social agenda. They found that by making federal govt big, and increasing federal funding for their programs, they could advance their conservative social agenda better (as in, more efficiently and more strongly) than the low-spending fiscal conservatives could.
Hence, neo-cons became the other big-govt party, using the big govt to advance their social programs and impose conservative philosophy through financial leverage.

They are basically former democrats who split with their party over national defense and became Republicans. Paul Wolfowitz, Karl Rove. Dick Cheney gets called a neo-con, but he was always a conservative Republican. Now libs just call anyone who supports the "War on Terror" a "neocon".
