I know several 'gifted' people who can't hold a *regular* conversation...blahblahblah. Keep wanting to make it all about lofty ideals and politics, never just about....life.

It all depends on what the conversation is about. Although a person with a milder form of retardation can usually communicate relatively well some context might be too difficult for them to understand particularly if humor or sarcasim is involved. Most mild MR's function more normally than you would think. It's up to the other people to adapt to make them feel included and converse at a level that is comfortable for them.

It depends on the "normal person". I know for a fact that I would not enjoy a conversation with a mildly retarded person since I usually engage in somewhat more complex conversations about politics, religion, current events etc. and they might not be able to follow. And how are you defining mildly retarded? Maybe if it was only very slight retardation and the normal person wasn't looking for anything else but small talk I suppose they could hold a conversation. Though...I think it would be interesting to talk to one to gain a new and fresh perspective on things.

People have a cognitive level/IQ. They also have a social level/IQ. They are separate. I had a young man worked with who what an IQ of and 18 month old. But he was very high functioning socially. Just because he couldn't remember his colors at the age 24, didn't mean we couldn't have the most interesting conversations. He learned social skills from his school and his family...and from his two older brothers who did their best to corrupt him. He is a treasure.
