Hmmm - - - never thought of it like that - - - the West Indies were settled seperately, in fact one of the amazing things about English Colonization was that there was no master plan no over all strategy. In settling the West Indies the British developed a strategy of exterminating the locals. They leanred that a colony would not survive without a core of professionals; at least two 'coopers,' blacksmiths, carpenters, masons, and a few professional soldiers. They learned to appreciate 'local' crops and to adapt their crops for local conditions. They learned that a set of strict ordinances & rules were needed to maintain order. And above all they learned to rely upon their own resources and industry growing increasingly aware that their parent country was often blind indifferent to their needs.

With all that said I still say that each colony pretty much learned on its own, especially the first half dozen or so. In time the vaue of the West Indies was vital to the growth of New England and The Chesapeake providing them with markets for their grains & other products.
