You mean the little miniatures used as a decoration? I have a couple in my home, they let people know I'm into making clothes. I also have several in my studio, they look cute and go with the decorating scheme, like a dress shop from the fifties. Originally, the small ones were used as scale models to test designs and to show ideas to clients. This saved money as the miniatures used far less of the very costly fabrics, and the client would have a good idea of what the finished dress would look like. Now, they are mostly decorations.

its used for making clothes. when someone is making them, they pin the clothes on the dress form so they get an idea of how it will look on a persons body, and can make alterations without pricking actual people with pins.

if you can, catch an episode of project runway (not sure when its on), they use them in like, every episode, so you can see how its done

edit: hmmm...ive never heard of that, the thing you mentiond youve seen on websites...do you have a picture or an example we could look at? cause the only dress forms ive heard of are the kind we have already mentiond

Usually for making clothes, I have one in my room that I use to show clothes or dresses I wore for plays or to see how stuff looks together.
