So the left front on my 2000 Camaro makes a whining/winding noise. I have been told that it is the wheel bearing. For only 7 years old and 42,0000 miles what could have caused this to happen? If not the wheel bearing what else could be making the noise? Is there some sort of test I can do to ensure that the problem if is in fact the wheel bearing?

Check the caliper and brake pads, it may be hung up and dragging. Wheel bearings should last for quite some time unless it was overtorqued with an impact wrench or exposed to salt water at some point. Make sure its not coming from that side under the hood. GM pulleys aren't the best any more and a bearing may be bad.

The bearing could be bad as you are supposed to clean and re pack the wheel bearings about every 2 or 3 years. So have them serviced and that will find a bad bearing.

If the brakes are wearing out, there is a little piece of springy metal on the pads that is designed to rub and make a noise so that you know that the brakes are nearing the end of their life. That is more likely.

overtightening or undertightening the axle bolt can cause premature barring failure.
