Don't worry if you think that you are getting worse and worse most people go through phases. Not everybody is going to be able to run full speed right out of the gate. Poetry is one of the few places of self-expresion where you don't have to get it right away just like drawing you don't have to be able to get it right away. It's like more along the lines of muscles or like chess. With either the more you use them the stronger you become. With chess usually the person with more experience is the one that's going to be able to win most of the time. That doesn't actualy mean that somebody with lack of experience is never going to be able to write good poems. But life experiences really count in poetry everything that you feel touch all of that is going into your poetry and in the end you'll be able to see the self reflection in it as well and then you'll be able to grow a lot better. Just keep at it. Rember this is an art form that anybody with an average mind can do. On top of that you are going to be unique because you know how to express yourself you even if it's not written the best as some people would say.

If you don't enjoy the writing of the poetry, you won't be able to do it anyway. If you love writing it, though, you'll get better just from doing it more. But the same is true if you take up photography, dance, writing, singing... You can only succeed at an art form if you actually enjoy it.

So if you still enjoy writing poetry, keep doing it. Also read a wide variety of it - take in as many different kinds as you can, collect the ones you really like, and try to figure out what you like about it so much.

Art is also completely subjective, so if you think your poetry is bad, it is. Even if everyone tells you it's great, if you don't think so then you aren't making the point you want to make. But that doesn't mean you should give up if you still love doing it.

Good luck!

You should not write poetry if the only reason you write it is so that you'll "stand out" or "be different"...you really need to do some self-examination. The only reason you should write poetry is to express yourself with words that are greater than the sum of their parts. Poetry is a way to be, not something to do. You write poetry when you find you have something to say, or to express a way you feel in a way that allows someone else to understand how you feel without telling them directly. You paint your feelings with words as your brush and the page as your canvas, and if your painting is a little out of kilter, who cares? It's your painting and it's a reflection of how you see the world and your ability to express it.

If you want to get better at writing poetry, you can do workshops, buy books to read and inform you on the various technical aspects of poetry, which is always a good thing (a carpenter can try building a house by putting nails to wood until it 'looks' like a house, but you'd be better off living in a house built by a carpenter who learned how to use the tools of the trade and understood how to put a roof on straight...right?)

Meanwhile, keep the poems you write and edit them over time to make them better, or simply rewrite them...or just move on to the next poem. However, editing will always improve your poem...or I should say, your poem will always improve with editing...even though it may take several tries.

if you love to write it, then write it...and accept that whatever you write is you.

I think if this were soccer, basketball, debate team, chess team, tennis or anything else there wouldn't be much question. You either make the team or you don't.

If it turns out that you don't make the team but you still like the endeavor you find another way to do it or you move on and find something you are good at.

I just don't buy into the idea that everybody gets a gold star for participating. On the other hand, I have repeatedly seen people who have gone off and done other things that have been amazing. So instead of trying to be something you are not, work at something you love that you can be good at.

Interest in Poetry never dies. It may not be possible to write continuouisly. On such occasions it is better you try to write some other forms of writing too. When the poetic mood comes write poems; then in other times write articles so that your interest in poetry can be sustained for a long time. That is how poetic interest is developed and better poems can be written. Also, maturity develops as time passes on and the poems you write later give you full satisfaction bringing laurels you never expected! So, All the Best! That is poetry.

If you enjoy writing poetry, then you should definitely keep writing poetry. You may not believe that you are good at it, but poetry is something that speaks to the reader and especially to the heart of the writer. I believe that there are many forms of poetry and one is not better than another. Keep writing what you feel and never stop writing unless you truly feel that you no longer care to write. Best wishes.

it takes years to get good at this.
people probably dont' like what I say on this forum but I'm trying to help people.

don't write like you are pouring out your feelings. Write like you are observing, taking a photo. Focus on one event, and describe the event, the little things.

I published a poem quite a while back describing an auction, - the room, the bidders, the heartbroken seller - the smoke, the emotions. that's the idea.

anything with feelings keep separate - and call that therapy - and it's good therapy but you dont' publish those.

do it for yourself and not for other people.
That's not why you do it. You do it for you.
you seem like me - I have trouble doing things for myself I want to do for everyone else. I"d do something to be noticed but not for myself.

people aren't really noticing, they are too busy thinking about themselves.

it's cool that you think poetry helps you get noticed.
that's a good thing.

if you write about feelings write about 1 feeling maybe - not a ton of them. focus instead of being all over the place.

I did an exercise and I picked objects around my house and I wrote poems about the object.

I wrote about candles, etc.

that's a good thing to start with.
