The movie was about two chldhood friends (boy and girl) and an old man. The boy finds a shark in a tidal pool and touches it /picks it up. The old man tells him that the shark is now imprinted/bonded to him. As the boy gets older he carries out the old man's last wish (to be buried at sea with sharks so that his soul can transfer to a shark. The girl and her parents move away. The boy grows up and indeed the shark stays near him. Years later the girl returns to visit. The boy lives in a floating shack at the end of a pier with a hatch in the floor. She see's this and is in disbelief that the shark really made the bond with him and he still has it. He then pulls out a sketch book where he had been sketching her unseen for all the years she was gone. The sketches are so accurate they could be photographs, even as her hairstyle changed through the years. I don't remember how the movie ends. I think I was about 10 years old when I saw this movie. ...I remember seeing this very compelling adventure/drama, when I was younger, sometime in the seventies; I think that the film is called "Tiko and the Shark", from 1964, but I'm not entirely sure. The webpage below seems to run parallel to what I remember, and also what you describe...
