Bandwidth is the amount of information or data that can be sent over a network connection in a given period of time. Think of it like an energy band. Only so much can be used per time period. For instance, I have 10 gigabytes of bandwidth per month. Every time a user views one of my pages, one of my graphics, one of my songs or any other material on my server, it uses bandwidth. The more files viewd, the more bandwidth is transferred. Once I reach my 10 gigs in a one month time frame, my server is locked until the month resets.

Most servers have a counter that displays how much bandwidth you've already used.

Bandwidth is Internet traffic as measured data transfer. People who operate websites fear exceeding their allowed bandwidth because they will have to pay extra for the extra bandwidth visitors use, or their sites may be shut down by their provider. That sort of thing can happen if a site gets to the front page of Digg or something like that. Unless you operate a website, you have nothing to be concerned about. Good night!

In website hosting, the term "bandwidth" is often used metaphorically, to describe the amount of data that can be transferred to or from the website or server, measured in bytes transferred over a prescribed period of time. This can be more accurately described as "Monthly Data Transfer."

Web hosting companies often quote a monthly bandwidth limit for a website, for example 500 gigabytes per month. If visitors to the website download a total greater than 500 gigabytes in one month, the bandwidth limit will have been exceeded.
