Who cares, just don't put money into it. Trust me they're not going to be upset if you don't put money into, but if you do and you're a regular, you'll get wonderful service everytime you go there. For a dollar or your spare change when you leave....thats not worth good service and a huge smile every time you walk into the place?
All who answered negatively about it; have you ever worked in the food business?
And just to make it clear, I think it is some what tacky too, but for some 16 or 17 year old at the local coney island or bbq joint, give me a break.
And Tinkerbell, you can't be serious about the whole penny thing? How stingy are you?

I am not crazy about it.
I will tell you something even worse. My brother just was killed. His wife had a "Celebration of Life" at the Moose Lodge. There was a big room, the lodge catered the food and there was a hosted bar (it was all free to the people). The bartender placed a tin BUCKET on the bar marked tips. He received so many tips, he had to empty the bucket. This was a Memorial Service for goodness sake. If I had been in charge, I would have asked him to remove it, but since my brother was married, his wife was in charge. We would have given him a generous tip when we settled up the bar bill after everything was over. I thought this was so tacky.

Yes, it's okay with me. Just because it's there doesn't mean that I must tip. If I choose to, it's because that I felt the interaction was extraordinary and want to encourage a repeat performance at a later visit. On the other hand, if I don't tip, I don't feel guilty either.
People are funny if you think about it. How many times have customers dropped their change into a tip cup at Starbucks without thinking about it? They're tipping the barista and the rest of the crew for a cup of coffee. Think they would consider doing the same at Taco Bell or McDonald's?

I don't think it's any more OK than for cashiers at the grocery store, discount store, hair salon, shoe store, dollar store, mini mart, movie theater, gas station, or anywhere else to put out a tip jar.
Tipping is for service, and if the service only lasts a minute or two and all they do is take my money and hand me a sack, what size tip do they think they earned?

I personally don't mind the jars being there, but it would take OUTSTANDING customer service for me to actually place a tip in one. Tips are rewards for good service and not requirements. Servers working in a restaurant who are not waitresses make a higher wage than those who are. Waiters/Waitresses have a lower minimum wage with the expectation that they will receive tips. A cashier would need to be superb for me to feel they warrant a tip for doing their job.

I don't care for it.
I have worked in many different food Establishments and this is one custom I just don't go for. Never leave a tip in those jars

I understand that workers in fast food establishments are underpaid but I think it is innapropriate to be expected to tip when you are ordering food to go. There is a difference between serving and cashiering.

No. What's the point? I feel tips are for service above ordinary. Just giving you your stuff is about as ordinary as you can get. Maybe if they deliver it with a song and dance routine or something.

Yes, I do...but the requirement would not be 15-20%, but they work hard regardless.
