I did the timing for my 89 trooper 4 cyl 2.6l and I think the pully marks are off. When I set the distributor to tdc with the timing light the engine barely runs. however if I set it to the left of tdc the engine runs best. Any suggestions other then get a new car would be appriciated.

Setting the car to TDC is not as good as 5 degrees or more advanced. Totally normal. The marks are on however your vacuum advance in the distributor may have a leak in the hose or the mechanical advance in the distributor is not working well. I personally think a vacuum hose.

Did you remember to block the vacuum advance ??
Also TDC is very far into Retard, most engines run at 5 to 15 degrees advanced but the vacuum kicks some of that in... you should have a hose to the manifold going to a diaphram on the side of the distributor for the vacuum to control advance under accileration and minimise PING. That is to be disconected and pluged during timing adjustment.

Do you have the vacuum advance attached?
