Chevy HHRs are amazing on gas mileage. I drove one from Nashville, TN to Binghamton, NY (~880 miles) and dropped around $60 on gas.
Of course, if you're really concerned about gas mileage, and not so much style, there's always the Prius...
Me, I'd go with a Civic for a first car, though. All-around, not too horrible. A lot of people have them, though...

Hey.
GO with Toyota Corolla. It is a great car. Corolla is Japanese it is reliable, good looks and is good overall. If you buy an old car 1990 Corolla is good to go for. It is cheap, will be cheap on Insurance and will save you a lot on taxes. The good news is that the insurance rate will be much lesser than the new unreliable cars that are also expensive and high in Insurance. So a sound advice is that go for Toyota Corolla or a Tercel both of which will make a nice car. I have a Corolla which is very nice and handles great with great fuel economy. There was a little work in the front brakes and muffler, otherwise the overall condition is as good as a slightly used car.
Good luck with buying a car.

Honda civic. It's one of the safest of the sedans. and they hybrids are much better for the environment.
I drive a 2003 Honda and it's great. If you want to go from 0-60 very quickly, it doesn't help. But if you need a practical, safe car with lots of carrying space then the civic is the best.

I've heard that Kia's are cheap with good mileage, but they aren't 'great' cars. Still, a brand new one with a warranty is about $10,000, vs a 'better model' used car with no warranty for $3000 or so.

Honda civic or accord low miles if you can but they are good for 300,000 miles or more. Old with low miles is your best deal. I have fixed bought or sold hundreds I am a certified master tech. also because there so many on the road aftermarket parts are cheap and made by many different manufactures.

The old Volkswagen Beetle was the best car ever. No water, no radiator, but, still had a good heater. Small engine in rear, easy to work on, even I myself did my own maintenance. Why did they ever stop making it?
