i tore on both my deliveries(4th degree both), and i felt tugging down there, because at the end of the birth the epidural starts wearing down, it felt weird

i have had 4 babies and 4 tears to one degree or another, some worse than others. I never had an epidural so they used something to numb me before stitching. With one of my babies i had a spot that was really sore even after numbing. Each time my midwife touched it I would jump. They had to renumb me some more then it was fine. You might be a little aware of the stitching or tugging of it but its not really painful or anything. After you give birth you feel like you can take on the world anyways. I always felt the stitching process was more of an annoyance the anything else. I was ready to be covered back up and get to holding my baby. Good luck. BTW my smallest baby was 8 lbs 9 oz. I just had my 4th, my largest at 11 lbs!!! If you have a small baby you might not need stitched at all

I had an epidural and felt nothing when being stitched up. I just wanted to add that if you do tear or are cut ask about a sitz bath ( not 100% on spelling). Because after the stitches are there and the pain meds wear off it hurts. But a sitz bath is wonderful!!! You can go as much as you want while still in the hospital. I wanted one for home too.

You do not feel the stiches and more than likely the doctor will cut you so you won't tear. And no you don't feel that either. If you have an epidural you are numb from the waist down and if you opt for a drug free birthing, you are numb from the pressure the baby outs on you while it was being born. After you 've had the labor pains, nothing hurts! lol!

I had over an hour of stitches (I had exceptional problems with the first one) and even though the epidural had worn off, they used a shot of local anesthetic so I didn't feel the stitches. It is like a tugging. And there's SO much going on with the doctor and the nurses, and checking the baby and talking to people...it's too busy in the room to notice too much about what's going on down there.

When my son was born, he literally tore me from hole to hole - 8pounds 2 ounces - big boy!! LOL I was so concentrated on my new bundle of joy that I did not feel any pain what so ever while she stitched me back up....she didn't use any numbing cream at all, but then again I still has pain meds in my system - when you give birth, you mostly worry about the baby being okay and just looking into those most beautiful eyes, everything else seems to not matter!! I hope this helps hehe!!

My experience is that slight tearing is normal and stitches are unnecessary for proper healing. However, if stitching is truly necessary, they will make sure you are numb first. This will be due to local anesthetic or epidural still in place.
Someone wrote 8lbs 2oz is a big boy? That is average nowadays. My daughter was 9lbs 15oz and I had only a slight tear, no stitching necessary!
Choose natural birth! It is healthier for you and healthier for baby! If I can do it, so can you! Home-birthed baby was 9lbs 15oz! (She was my 2nd! First was born via cesarean!)

They numb you, but you may not tear. And if they seem to think you will they will likely do an episiotomy to make it easier to repair anyway.
I have heard some moms who have epidurals say they are always cut (episiotomy) while lots I know who go natural say they don't tear. I have only torn to the point of needing 1 stitch twice.

I had a drug free birth (no epi) and I did not feel the tear when it happened. (The pressure of the baby's head stops the bloodflow to that area so you don't feel it.)
After the baby was out they did a local anesthetic before the stitches. So no, I did not feel that either.
ETA: I specifically requested that I did not want an epseodomy (sp?) because I feel it is less damaging to tear. My OB also massaged and supported the perinium as the baby was delivered to help minimized the tearing.

I didnt have any pain relief for either of my labours as they were both precipitate(came on all of a sudden).I was given an injection to numb the area.I could still feel alot of tugging and a little discomfort though.I had a grade 3 tear which was quite bad.Once you have given birth ,you can handle just about everything.

I agree with the mom who said it is better to tear-muscle almost NEVER tears, cutting almost always involves the muscle. It does not hurt to be sewn up, even if the numbing shot wears off like mine did. There's not a million nerves there. (You can pinch yourself there now to prove it!)
You can also do a lot to avoid either-massage the perenium with oil, do Kegels from now until delivery, don't deliver on your back. These may involve getting support from your hospital and doctor. I had a bad tear with child number one and nothing with child number two because of what I learned in between. (To be fair, child number one had his head turned to my side instead of down and that was a great deal of the problem, but I prefer the tear to a c-section).
Good luck!
