At first a situation can seem very terrible and makes you want to cry. Later on you become wiser or realize it wasn't so bad, sometimes even funny, and you laugh about it.

For instance, you spill something on your best shoes and just want to cry. A few weeks later, you realize that when you spilled on your shoes, that was when that cute guy noticed you and came to your rescue. So you can laugh over how the two of you met.

Sadness is fleeting; think happy thoughts.

It means you will survive it and laugh someday. It won't hurt as much as it does right now. Those are the directions you gave me. You can turn any of those stupid slogans around.
