got to stick your hand in there and find the item. Even use a clothes hanger to hook it out. If it is past the toilet trap and stuck in the pipe, then you got to shut off the water to the toilet and unbolt the toilet from the floor and lift it off to look in the pipe....going to the next corner of the pipe where it is most likely.
Just be sure to have a new wax ring cause you HAVE TO replace it....and carefully set the toilet down on that ring once....and bolt it down.

If your extremely lucky, you may be able to drain the toilet, after turning the water off. Take a mirror, a small one, look down into the drain and, up into the "S" of the trap, you may be able to see the object. If you can, I have done this several times, take a clothes hanger (wire) and bend it to fit the "s" and work the hanger up into the trap using the mirror, hook the object and pull it down.
If your not lucky, your going to have to take the toilet off and go from the back, using the same method and pull the object out.

A lot easier way is to watch your son, why are you letting him play around the toilet, don't you think it's a little unsafe and unsanitary? You do say he's done this in the past leading me to believe he's playing there all the time?

go to your nearest bunnings or department store and buy a plunger. keep it in your house as it seems like a reoccuring incident. plunge your toilet yourself, if this doesnt work you can try a mop. if this doesnt work you will need to call a plumbing company in your area to unblock your drain. dont use the toilet, at all, the more toilet paper that goes down will get stuck on the toy and end up blocking your mains.

Don't forget to loosen and remove the nuts from the floor to bowl bolts. You should also replace them with 5/16 in bolts for better security.

wow..I hate to say this but your gonna have to pull the toilet and get it out.this will involve getting a new wax ring and possible new hardware to install it properly.that or either installing a new toilet.. a competent handyman should have no problem with this.
