No, free speech does not require tax exemption...but religious organizations, like many not for profit organizations...do not make...you know...a profit.
Soi what would you tax...the number of people in the organization?

No, no, maybe
Businesses should not be tax exempt, because they are run for profit. The separation of religion and state is a freedom to stop the government from trying to control or favor a religion. Businesses need to be controlled and the rules are general enough that religion doesn't come into it very often. For example all religious book stores are covered by laws that cover book stores and many of them sell bibles and other religious books.
Corporations can't become religions because that gives them too much power. It will also allow them to shelter too much of their wealth. The purpose of the separation between religion and state was not meant to let a religion get rich, but the Catholics have managed to do so. Religions are supposed to be nonprofit organizations. Can a corporation lie to you and claim a deductible expense? Yes, it’s called advertising and the tobacco companies did it for years. But, when they where finally caught they had to pay a large fine. So if a corporation lies then it will be held accountable, if it is ever caught in that lie.
Are Americans screwed? How? Yes and no. You are too vague. Religious Americans are not screwed and anyone can form their own religion and worship the god of their choice even imaginary or false ones.

Religious organizations should not be tax exempt. It's a joke. They are corrupt and should pay their share of taxes since they don't really provide help to the community. Unless bungholing their little boys counts.

You said the operative word. BUSINESS. And that's just what religion is. A business no different than Home Depot. Except, they sell you hope and ritual services, and control by fear. At least I walk out of the Depot with something tangible in my hands.
Tax them!!
