It's a tradition that goes back to Brooklyn. Neither Red Barber, Connie Desmond, Ernie Harwell, nor Vinny had a color man. (Nor Jerry Doggett, once Vinny started working with him in LA.)

Now that I think about it, it probably goes back to the first broadcasts of people like Graham McNamee. Announcers were expected to just report on what was happening, not to really analyze things, so there was no need for a color man.

I'd guess color guys came in with television. Dizzy Dean was colorful enough not to need someone in the booth, but I guess the suits thought someone should be in there with the play-by-play guy to tell what it's "really like" down on the field.

Vin's worked with color men in the past, when on the Series or the Game of the Week. He worked with Joe Garagiola for years, and there was that All-Star Game in the 80s, when Ronald Reagan did some play-by-play.

But, to get back to your question, it's how he's comfortable doing a game. Since Charley Steiner and Rick Monday work together (or Steiner and Steve Lyons on TV), one assumes that one Vinny retires -- a day I hope never comes -- the tradition will retire, too.

Because he doesn't need one. He is classic. My whole life, as soon as I hear Vinny I know it's time for my favorite time of year...baseball season. He is legendary and I don't know what the heck I'm going to do when he retires!! I'm hopeful that he is training Rick Monday and Charlie Steiner to call the games just like he does.

Scully is the last of a great generation of announcers. LISTEN to his gamecalling -- he doesn't need a color doofus beside him.

Vin Scully is probably the only thing I envy people living in LA.

Because he's an old school announcer. A lot of announcers from his era didn't have a color guy.

Why does he need one? He's probably the one announcer that can be in the booth alone, and never lose his audience.

They tried having him work with one a couple times, but he would just talk over them.

because his ego wont let it happen.this 2007...he needs to adjust,i don't care how great he is,it doesn't hurt to have a second pair of eyes and lips in the booth.

Because he is a legendary announcer. He doesn't need one.
