I currently got a new computer and I just tried to download the DSL download CD onto my computer. It says my desktops needs an ethernet adapter. I really need help because I am the most computer illiterate person in the world. My desktop is an HP A6130N. I bought it at CompUSA. My question is that should my desktop have come with an ethernet adapter? If not, what type of broadband internet can I use without an ethernet adapter because looking on amazon, they're quite expensive. PLEASE HELP!

Well, all desktops have to come with an ethernet adapter. Are you sure you have plugged in the wires correctly? There's two ports that look like an ethernet port, one is a telephone line, the other is the ethernet port. You might have plugged in the ethernet wire into the telephone line. The ethernet port has two lights on the side of it, it might be hard to see, but you'll see it; it's also wider than the telephone port. If that's still not working for you, I put a link on the bottom, go to that and maybe that'll work for you. If that's not doing anything, you might have to call either your DSL company, or HP.

You need an ethernet adapter for any broadband service.

I looked up your computer model and you do have an ethernet card. Look on the back...the ethernet jack looks like a phone jack, but just a little bigger..if you have this, and can plug the ethernet cable (network cable, blue, red, or yellow usually) into it, then you have an ethernet adapter. If for some reason you don't you can buy a PCI Ethernet Adapter (which means you open your computer case and install it) or you can buy a USB ethernet adapter (just plug into an available USB port).

Another possibility is the LAN is disabled. Go to control panel > network connections and look at "local area connection" icon...if it says disabled double-click it to enable it.

According to the specs on your computer (I just looked them up) your computer DOES have a built in adapter.
Did you mean you tried to install the DSL CD on that computer?
Have you ordered the DSL service and do you have a DSL modem? Because your modem would plug into your phone line and then a separate cord would run from the modem and connect to the ethernet plug on the back of your PC (Unless you are using a router. In that case connecting is a bit different)
You'd have to already have the DSL service ordered and set up and have the modem plugged in properly. Then you would have to configure your computer to connect to the DSL service.
I really don't know how else to help you without physically being there in person.
If you've ordered DSL then you should call their tech support line. If anything, go back to CompUSA and ask for their help :o)

Mine did the same thing, you do not need an ethernet adapter. All you need to do id use a usb connector instead. When the screen comes up that will ask you what kind of connection you prefer then just click usb. Any more questions contact me on my messenger.

hp.com website says that model has a built in 10/100Base-T network interface. It looks like a wider version of a phone jack and is very likely on the rear panel at one end of the cluster of input and output jacks.

should be that you just plug it into your DSL connection [modem or router or whatever] and it's ready for your connection.
