I can not say for China, but in the Philippines they grow the finger nail long on one finger to eat, "Balut." balut is a boiled duck’s egg with a fetus inside. The smell would knock you over.

The Chinese believe that the pinky finger should be longer than the first knuckle of the ring finger as this represents good luck, prosperity, and health. In most cases, the male fingers are actually shorter than the knuckle so Chinese men will allow the finger nail of the pinky finger to grow longer, thus extending the length of the finger above the ring finger knuckle. It's an old school superstition that is fading with the younger generation but you still see many who allow this finger nail to grow. It does look silly, but who knows, maybe some truth to it??

Growing a pinky fingernail extra long is a fine, and practical tradition which allows the person with the long fingernail to use it for sniffing mysterious powdery substances up their noses.
Snuff is the powder typically claimed to be sniffed with the long nail, although preparations of opium, meth, or cocain can also be used...
China has a long history of opium, and many "wise sages" are depicted with an opium snorting fingernail, so some of the younger generatons, who don't commonly know these things grow it as a fashion statement to say that they are "wise."

I have never hear of any chinese culture regardingly keeping of long nail. Within my chinese group, I have never see any chinese man keep long nail as well. Not sure whether you happened to see one with long nail, but I believe that is just their own choice, and it's not restricted to chinese man.

In some Asian cultures, growing out the pinky finger nail signifies wealth and prosperity. The logic behind it is they can let it grow because they don't do manual labor (they work an office job).

I'm Chinese and live in a neighborhood where 75% of the population is Asian...and I have never heard of this custom.
I guess it might be a tradition from somewhere obscure in China...?
