OK, I have read enough in the past couple of months to make my head explode! But I would like a few experinced opinions. I am doing my first PC build, and I'm kind of stumped on a motherboard. I'm going with an E6600 Core 2 duo CPU, a 300GB Seagate HD, and I intend to run Windows XP. I am just not ready to deal with all the bugs I have read about with Vista yet. I may upgrade later. I am not a hard core gamer, so overclocking is not REAL important to me, but I wouldn't mind having the option if I choose to do so. I plan on going with 2GB of DDR2 ram, maybe more in the future. I mainly just want a reliable MB, with a little 'wiggle room' if I decide to make some tweaks later on. I should also note, I have already purchased a 550W power supply. Is that enough? I will run 2 DVD drives, and a mid level video card. Gaming is not important, so no SLI. All of my drives will be SATA. I will also be running 3-4 fans, and most likley a fan controller and a couple of cold cathode lights. Thanks!

Sounds great so far. Everything. Good idea on the extra case fans. Do a search in Yahoo Answers for Zalman as they make superior case fans of all sizes and mounting brackets.

Your power supply is fine. Great.

Don't skimp on your video card. Get something close to the $100 price range with at least 256mb on the graphic card preferably with a cooling fan.

In regard to what's a good motherboard, I recommend you visit Tigerdirect and NewEgg and read the customer reviews there. You can really get a good feel what others like or dislike. Their links below.

Last thoughts, if you haven't gotten a good case, get one with plenty of bays and space. I slowly fell in love with clear sided cases and I'm even accepting the neon lights a bit. Why not enjoy your case too?

And if you think there's a small chance you might upgrade later to Vista, why not find components that are Vista approved or compatible? Something to think about.

Enjoy!

spend the few extra dollars and get an Intel brand mobo

they're built like tanks ... they last and last and last.

also Windows o/s [both XP and Vista] are tested (only) on Intel mobos ... word is that the two companies are tight and commo any issues they see at all back and forth quite freely.
